Imagine hearing Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett, Kurt Elling, and Mark Murphy on one stage and all in a single afternoon. That’s what Jazz Society members and guests were treated to recently in the person of vocalist, Mon David. Not only does Mr. David have a beautiful voice, but he also posses an amazing range and eclectic style. His choice of material was suburb as well. Choosing to sing mostly beautiful ballads including You Must Believe in Spring, Invitation, You Are Too Beautiful, he threw a few up tempo tunes like Jobim’s No More Blues. It was evident that Mon likes to scat and can change octaves at will. The veteran trio members, Ian Bernard – piano, Richard Simon – bass, and Paul Kreibech on drums, were at their best and were definitely in sync with the vocalist and he gave them ample room to solo as well. Of all the music that we heard that afternoon the lovely Last Night When We Were Young was my favorite and brought some of the audience, including me, to tears. That selection was arranged by our own Ian Bernard who “discovered” Mon and brought him to us. Thanks, Ian!
