Lady Blue and her band were the perfect group to help us celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month in a big way. Donna was in great voice and her choice of songs were varied and fun. Many of the tunes were variations on blues with a lot of originals and old standards mixed in.
The band opened with an upbeat, Them There Eyes and a great tenor sax solo by Brian McCann who also played brilliantly on his clarinet with the old Andrews Sisters hit, Bei Mir Best Du Schon. Donna and the guys had fun with hits like Honeysuckle Rose and Hit That Jive, Jack making them sound new all over again. The amazing pianist, John Douglas, was right in there on every tune with an inspiring solo on Blue Bossa. Guitarist, Greg “Snoots” Loeb, showed up with his purple”zoot suit” favoring us with several originals with quirky names like My Name is Merle, But Everyone Calls me Luke and You’re Bad. With all the clowning, it was obvious that he’s also a fine musician. Bassist, Stan Taylor and John Lacques on drums kept this tight little band all together and with Donna’s lovely voice and great stage presence, the afternoon was an extremely pleasant affair. Again, we are so blessed to have such talented folks around!
