Headless Household
by Natalie Wilson
Jazz Society members celebrated Mother’s Day this year being entertained by local group, Headless Household. They describe themselves as being “hopelessly eclectic” and yes, they are…but in a good way! Most all the tunes were originals, penned by guitarist, Joe Woodard. One of the more melodic was a Latin, Hey, Hey, Brazil. Pianist, Dick Dunlap, a fine musician, showed what a tasteful player he is on that piece as well as others that afternoon. The band fortunately threw a few jazz standards into the mix. New Yorker, alto saxophonist Dave Binney, played a beautiful rendition of My Ship with a gorgeous intro again by Dick Dunlap. A new addition to the group, vocalist Nicole Lvoff sang standards like All the Things You Are as well as some some fun original duets with Joe, their voices blending nicely. Before and After featured the other fabulous saxophonist, tenor player Tom Buckner. Joe had some fun with Hefti Darlin’, a take-off on former Montecito resident, Neal Hefti’s Little Darlin’. LA based bassist Steven Nelson kept in band in sync as well as fine drummer, Tom Lackner. Obviously, the band enjoys playing together and working out original compositions that are not done by other groups. It was a nice change to hear some of these unusual tunes played by an unusual group, to be sure!
