The Santa Barbara Jazz Society held its holiday party at SOhO last month and started with a bang presenting a dozen of the Dos Pueblos Jazz Combo students under the direction of Les Rose. The group began with a brassy rendition of Stolen Moments where they showed their skills and styles as everyone soloed. They ended the highlight show with a rousing, rendition of “A Night in Tunisia.”
During a break in the music, Scholarship Chair, ReVay Seifert presented Dos Pueblos High School Music Director Les Rose with the Scholarship Award check for $1000 from the Jazz Society.
There followed a free form jazz jam with the house band: Woody DeMarco on piano, Hank Allen on bass, and Steve Stockmal on drums backed up on some tunes with Max Fourmi on trombone, and Les Rose on sax. Sandy Cummings joined on vocals. Cookies were passed around as friends, family members and musicians celebrated our great American jazz art form.
SBJS membership elected its new board, which consists of Ian Bernard, President; Natalie Wilson, Vice President; Sandy Cummings, Treasurer; Jan McBride, Secretary; ReVay Seifert, Scholarship Chair; Jan Smith, Membership Chair; Don Dancer, Graphics.
