Super Bowl vs. Super Jazz!
What a great afternoon featuring some adventurous singers and musicians and a terrific band led by trumpeter and keyboardist, Jeff Elliott along with bassist, Randy Tico and drummer, Kevin Winard. Jeff and his guys opened playing some of Jeff’s lovely originals then got right down to business supporting the cadre of singers and musicians ready to go.
Jazz Society Treasurer, Yvonne Bazinet opened with the positive ballad, What a Wonderful World and Maureen Strong chose the Ellington classic, In a Mellow Tone. Pianist, Tim Guan and trumpeter, Lance Rettburg jumped in to romp on Cantaloupe Island. Dick Dunlap and drummer, Dick Weller accompanied City College student vocalist, L J Washington on It Had to Be You and stayed on for Alison Tuma’s No Moon At All. Pianist, Dillon Kearns was on stage with Ejé Lynn Jacobs scatting his way through One Note Samba. Vocalist Henry Garrett got our attention on Fly Me to the Moon and was joined by pianist, Woody De Marco and drummer, Dave Bazinet. Phillip Choi and Camilo Abbate were on drums for Jan Smith singing Lullaby of Birdland and for Linda Martin on Lover Man. Guitarists Franklin Chen and Tom Collins added so much to afternoon’s mix along with tenor sax player, Colin Richardson. Jody De Marcos sang an upbeat, Just One of Those Things. Connor Wilcox had fun with Mac The Knife and Brent Reitz entertained us with Green Onions on his harmonica. Singer, Colene Riffo treated us to that Old Black Magic along with Monica Langhorne on I Can’t Give You Anything But Love. Jazz Society President, Sandy Cummings closed the show with an upbeat Deed I Do. Sandy and Jeff each deserve a big pat on the back for encouraging all the musicians and singers to participate and also given enough time up to do their thing. The audience loved it!
