John Proulx Trio April 21, 2013
What a terrific afternoon of music we, at the Jazz Society, were treated to
recently by John Proulx and his trio. Just back from a six week gig at
Feinstien’s in New York, it was apparent why John has
come to the attention of the jazz world. He seems to almost effortlessly
accompany his fabulous voice with an equally superb piano style. While
performing mostly jazz standards John, also a Grammy winning composer,
played a few of his own compositions. “Stuck in a Dream” a song he composed
for and recorded by Mary Stallings, is a gorgious tune and was recognized
so by the audience. Opening with “I Love Being Here with You”, a tune made
famous by Peggy Lee and most recently by Diana Krall, he romped through
that tune and went on to play many songs like “Frim Fram Sauce”,” Mona
Lisa”, and “It’s Only a Paper Moon” attributed to Nat King Cole, the
musical genius who has influence not only John, but a great many jazz
musicians. Rounding out the trio were veteran performers, Richard Simon on
bass and Kendall Kaye on drums. John also did several songs from his
fantastic album, “Baker’s Dozen”, a dedication to Chet Baker. “Reunion”, a
tune based on the cords to “There Will Never Be Another You” by saxophonist
Gerry Mulligan was a standout. The trio had a real grove going with
Ellingtons’s ” Do Nothing Till You Hear from Me” with Richard Simon playing
a lyrical bass and Kendall Kaye responding approperately with his drums.
The trio members are so talented and professional, they made it sound and
look easy and we know it’s not! We hope to be lucky enough to have them back
again.
