November 14th, 2021 was a memorable day for all of us here at the Santa Barbara Jazz Society. Not only did our event feature the tremendous vocal talent, James Arnold, along with pianist Woody DeMarco, bassist Hank Allen, and drummer Darrell Voss, but also presented moving tributes to Al Reese and Peter Clark who we sadly lost earlier this year. Tears, laughter, and love were in abundance throughout the afternoon. The James Arnold Quartet opened with a rockin’ crowd pleaser- “The Downhome Blues” that had the packed house bursting with enthusiasm. They followed with such standards as “Green Dolphin Street” and “All Blues”, which showcased the musicians’ incredible skill and professionalism. After more lively music, the tribute for Al Reese began. Hank Allen shared memories of working with Al, and a recording of Al singing “Impossible” was played. Hearing Al’s voice immortalized through the recording was deeply moving. His daughter, Rachelle, spoke a heartfelt tribute for her father. More music followed, including Arnold’s signature “Bye Bye Blackbird”. For the tribute in Peter Clark’s memory, longtime friends Maitland Ward and Yvonne Bazinet spoke, and reminisced on how generous and spirited Peter was. Following the tribute, the audience was treated to an array of different singers, all excellent. The evening was closed out with a swinging version of “Teach Me Tonight” performed by James Arnold. Not only is this song another of Arnold’s signatures, but also happened to be the first song that James had sung with Peter Clark back in the day. It was the perfect way to wrap up the afternoon- with nostalgia, hope, and sincerity.
